CoinAPI MCP connector

The CoinAPI connector brings live and historical crypto market data, including exchange rates, quotes, trades, order books and candles across exchanges, into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and any MCP client through one governed endpoint.

  • How it connects. Connects with an API key. The credential goes into a vault nobody reads back.

  • One address. https://api.elaichi.ai/mcp, the same for every user.

  • Their own access. An agent never gets more than the person it acts for.

How to connect

How to connect CoinAPI to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor

Two steps, about a minute.

1

In Elaichi

Connect CoinAPI once

  1. Open Connections, choose Add connection, and pick CoinAPI.

  2. Optionally set Share with to give a team access, then press Connect.

  3. Paste a CoinAPI API key. One person generates a token in CoinAPI and pastes it once. Everyone else works through Share with, and never sees it.

The credential is vaulted. Nobody reads it back, not even the AI.

Use cases

What teams do with CoinAPI through Elaichi

Every one of these runs inside the access the person already has, and lands in the same audit log.

  • Trading

Check a price before placing an order

Ask for the current quote, recent trades and order book depth for a symbol on a specific exchange, then compare it with the same pair elsewhere before you act.

  • Research

    Pull candles for a backtest

Fetch daily or hourly open, high, low, close and volume history for a symbol over any date range, and have the agent summarize the trend or export the series for your model.

  • Finance

Value crypto holdings at a set date

Look up the historical exchange rate for each asset on the reporting date and produce a valuation table in your reporting currency without opening a spreadsheet of CSV downloads.

  • Treasury

    Compare rates across exchanges

Get the exchange rate for a pair across every venue CoinAPI covers and spot where the spread is wide enough to matter before moving funds.

  • Product

Keep asset and chain lists current

List the assets, chains, symbols and exchanges CoinAPI tracks, along with their icons, so a listing page or picker stays in step with what is actually traded.

  • Risk

Monitor market metrics on a venue

Pull volume, open interest and other exchange metrics for the venues you rely on and get a plain language read on anything that has changed since last week.

Try asking

  • “Show me today's BTC/USD exchange rate movement.”

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect CoinAPI to Claude?

Two steps. In Elaichi, add the CoinAPI connector and paste in the API key from your CoinAPI account, which is the only sign-in CoinAPI needs, with no OAuth application to register and no client ID or secret to generate. Then in Claude go to Customize, then Connectors, then Add, and paste the endpoint https://api.elaichi.ai/mcp. Sign in with your Elaichi account and CoinAPI market data is available in the conversation.

Does CoinAPI work with ChatGPT and Cursor as well as Claude?

Yes. Once CoinAPI is connected in Elaichi, the same endpoint, https://api.elaichi.ai/mcp, works in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, any other MCP client and the Elaichi Agent. You connect CoinAPI once and every client your team uses picks it up.

What can an AI agent actually do with my CoinAPI data?

With CoinAPI connected, an agent can look up current and historical exchange rates, quotes, trades and order books for any symbol on any covered exchange, pull candle history for a date range, and list the assets, chains, symbols and exchanges CoinAPI tracks along with exchange metrics. It is a read connector, so the agent answers questions and builds tables from market data rather than placing trades. Because CoinAPI covers a lot of ground, short concrete asks such as "hourly candles for BTC on Coinbase last week" get better results than long sentences.

Does connecting CoinAPI give the AI everything in my CoinAPI plan?

An agent working through CoinAPI in Elaichi sees exactly what the API key you connected is entitled to, no more. If your CoinAPI plan limits certain exchanges, history depth or request volume, those limits apply to every call the agent makes. Elaichi can narrow that access further, for example to exchange rates only, but it can never widen what your CoinAPI key allows.

Can my team share one CoinAPI connection?

Yes. One person connects CoinAPI in Elaichi with the API key, then shares the connection with a team, and nobody else on the team ever handles or sees that key. Each teammate still signs in to the endpoint as themselves, so every CoinAPI request in the audit log names the person who made it, not the person who connected it.

Can I stop an agent from deleting or changing things in CoinAPI?

The CoinAPI connector is read only, so an agent can look up rates, trades, order books and history but cannot place orders or change anything in your CoinAPI account. You can still restrict individual actions in Elaichi, for example hiding order book or historical data from a team that only needs exchange rates. A blocked action is never advertised to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any other client, so no prompt can reach it.

What happens to a CoinAPI connection when someone leaves?

When you offboard someone in Elaichi, their access to CoinAPI through the endpoint ends at once, in every client they had set up. If they were using a shared CoinAPI connection, it keeps working for everyone else on the team. If the connection was theirs alone, disconnecting it once in Elaichi removes CoinAPI from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and every other client at the same time.

Does the CoinAPI MCP connector work with Gemini, Codex, Claude Code or other MCP clients?

Yes. CoinAPI is reached over the same MCP endpoint every client uses, so anything that speaks MCP can call it — Gemini, Codex, Claude Code, Windsurf, Cline, Zed and OpenCode among them — alongside Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and the Elaichi Agent. The tools on offer and the access behind them are identical whichever client asks. Only the setup screen differs.

Is Elaichi an alternative to Zapier MCP for CoinAPI?

Yes. Both let Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor use CoinAPI. Zapier MCP fits a team that already automates in Zapier, since each person signs in and acts as themselves in that account. Elaichi fits when IT wants one address for the whole company, per-tool rules by role, and a record of every CoinAPI call.

How is Elaichi different from Composio for CoinAPI?

Composio gives AI agents tools and sign-in handling across 1,000+ apps, for developers building agents or people using an assistant, billed per tool call. Elaichi gives a company's own people governed access to CoinAPI: one address, restrictions per role or user, and $15 per user per month. Both have role permissions and a log of every call.
